Growing up in Hawaii I never really felt a career in art was possible. This is my first locally published book and very near and dear to my heart. I am thankful for each and every project that comes my way but this book was the first that I've actually seen in stores so it's extra exciting!
I took a different approach to this book than my usual illustration style. Usually I work about 80% in Illustrator (vector) and then 20% digitally painting in Photoshop. I feel for this project I flipped those stats, most of the work is digitally painted in Photoshop with a few elements imported from Illustrator. The publisher wanted a very "hand-painted" look.
Suffice to say I was nervous. I haven't digitally painted this much in years so I took this on as a personal challenge to try something new. I'm happy to say that I learned a lot about myself, my capabilities and discovered a renewed love of digital painting. I was able to be so expressive and it was really fun!
